Styles For Students – What Your University Fashion Says About You

Who cares about what you wear at Varsity, really? I mean, isn’t it all about learning and less about fashion? Well, that is partly true. While you can definitely pass your exams dressed in a plastic packet, it’s not to say that you should.

We’d like to offer a few thoughts on paying attention to your attire in the hallowed halls of your university.

How Does It Make You Feel?

It’s no secret that when you slob around the house with serious bed-head, dressed only in your PJs and this morning’s breakfast, you’re probably not feeling super confident. You wouldn’t say, go out on a date, would you? Why? Because how we look affects how we feel about ourselves. And in turn, our own self-image steers our decisions, moods, and in some cases, our abilities. If you are a law student, for example, smart attire puts your mind where it needs to be. Your track pants and oversized jumper aren’t going to add to the professional mental image that you have of yourself – yes, even while you’re still studying.

Likewise, if you’re an art student then letting your creative juices loose in your wardrobe may just be the inspiration you are looking for. Nobody expects you to attend Watercolours 101 dressed in chinos and a collared shirt.

Your fashion choices should be appropriate to who you are, who you want to be, and what the day demands of you.

What Do Your University Fashion Choices Say To Others?

Yes, our dress code is nobody’s business but ours. However, this time in university will almost certainly lay the foundation for future relationships, business networking and possibly even job opportunities. If you are generally slovenly, grubby, or stand out for all the wrong reasons, then you can’t be surprised if people give you a wide berth instead of a job offer.

Now is a good time to craft who you want to be, and what you want people to think of you. Do you want them to see you as an up-and-coming professional, or a scruffy student?

It’s not to say that you can’t have a little fun with your fashion choices. But always remember that people who don’t know you will judge you on how you dress, whether we like it or not.
