How to Stop Anxiety and Reduce Stress

People are a lot more anxious today than ever before. It seems that it’s simply part of being a human in today’s crazy world.

While some level of stress is to be expected, it becomes a problem when your anxiety has started giving you chest pains. Let’s take a look at some practical ways to lower your stress levels and stop anxiety in its tracks.

Take a Breath

You’ve probably heard someone tell you to “take a breath” when you’ve been anxious about something. And they have a point, but maybe not in the way you might think.

Taking long, deep breaths helps you to slow your heart rate and slow your breathing. This type of breathing can even bring you out of a panic or anxiety attack. There are plenty of different breathing exercises that you can do, and this is one way to help you stop anxiety.

Exercise and Meditate

When you’re stressed, you may not feel like meditating and exercising might not have even crossed your mind.

However, if you are feeling anxious, why not try meditation?

Working through guided meditation can do wonders to lower your anxiety levels and give you inner peace. Exercise – whilst being a bit more challenging for some – helps to reduce your anxiety and releases chemicals such as serotonin which helps to reduce anxiety levels significantly.

Limit Addicting Substances

Addicting substances, such as alcohol, smoking and caffeine, are frequently used to take the edge off or help you relax. It may seem like they are helping to stop anxiety at that moment, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Alcohol, for example, changes your levels of serotonin which actually makes you more anxious than you were beforehand and the effects of drinking can last for up to 24 hours. Clean eating, a healthy water intake, and making smart choices about what you’re putting in your body all go a  long way toward limiting the effects of stress.

Anxiety is something that everyone suffers from every now and then. When the anxiety is affecting your health, though, you need to make the changes that will benefit you and aid you in stopping anxiety.
