Holiday Safety Tips for Students

It’s that time of year again. As exciting as the holidays are, you need to keep your safety at the forefront of your mind. Sadly, the criminal element never sleeps. And as much as you’re looking forward to parties and time with family and friends, crowds tend to attract the darker members of society.

How can you stay safe without restricting yourself or ruining your holidays?

Carry Only the Money You Need With You

To reduce your chances of being a victim of a crime, it’s important that you don’t carry around too much cash.

If you have to make a purchase or withdrawal, use as little cash as possible. People are always watching, and if you’ve made a large withdrawal, there’s a good chance someone will know it! Don’t be an easy target.

Don’t Take Cash Out of ATMs at Night

If you are going to use an ATM, avoid using one at night. This is the time when most criminals commit crimes against individuals who use ATMs, so stay vigilant and keep your guard up. Additionally, avoid using ATMs in secluded areas that are not well-lit or monitored by security cameras.

Don’t Drink and Drive or Ride With Someone Who Has Been Drinking

Don’t drink and drive, no matter how old you are. It’s never a good idea to get behind the wheel after having one too many beers.

If your friends are okay to ride with someone who has been drinking, be smart and don’t make the same mistake. Where possible, choose a responsible designated driver. Or, call an Uber. Whatever you choose, make a plan and stick to it. It only takes a second for your life and those of your friends to change forever!

Remember, holidays are a time to enjoy yourself and be with friends and family. But the most important thing is to stay safe!

Don’t forget to use common sense; move around within a group, don’t take unnecessary risks, stay away from dodgy areas, don’t flash the cash, and try not to do anything you’ll regret!
