Does Music Help You Study?

Everyone enjoys listening to music, no matter the genre. Some use music as an escape, others use it to relax and maybe some just like to jump around their dorm to their favourite song.

Maybe you’ve found that music helps you concentrate or study better. But why does music help you study? Let’s find out.

Improved Focus

Music helps you focus in a number of ways. One of these ways is pretty obvious: it blocks out any background noise that could distract you from the task at hand. There isn’t anything more distracting – and annoying – than someone crashing and banging in the next room so maybe putting your earphones in isn’t the worst idea.

Music can also help to boost your mood and help you endure those long and gruelling hours of studying that you need to get through.

Reduced Stress

Let’s be honest, studying when you’re stressed is nearly impossible. You need to study for the test that might be coming up and the thought of the test is stressing you out. But because you’re stressed, you can’t study and it’s just an endless cycle.

Does music help you study and stay stress-free?

Yes, the right music can lower our heart rate as well as our cortisol levels. Endorphins are released which reduces your emotional and physical stress levels. While there are many songs designed to help you concentrate and lower your stress levels, all music can help you lower your blood pressure – even heavy metal music!

Music = Memory

Have you ever had a song stuck in your head and no matter what you do, it won’t go away? Or can you remember the lyrics to a song perfectly, even a song you haven’t heard in quite a while? Maybe a song comes on and it reminds you of a game you haven’t played in a while or a memory that you’ve all but forgotten.

Listening to music rekindles a portion of your brain that is linked to memory and emotion. Your brain finds patterns in the music, so it’s easy to remember songs or get them stuck in your head. By this logic, we can use music to train our brain to remember more important things such as some of our notes for an upcoming exam.

So, does music help you study? Yes, indeed it does. Not only does it help you study, but it improves your memory and helps to reduce your stress levels.

If you haven’t already, maybe start popping your earphones in when you have a bit of studying to do and watch your study session fly by.
