Cape Town Date Ideas For Students That Don’t Cost A Fortune

Dating in Cape Town can get expensive fast.

One minute you’re suggesting a casual Saturday afternoon. The next you’re looking at restaurant menus and wondering whether romance has always required this much disposable income.

It doesn’t.

Some of the best cheap date ideas in Cape Town are built around the city rather than a bill. If you want even more low-cost options that work with friends too, see our affordable Cape Town outings for students.

Do A Coffee Date Properly

Coffee remains one of the great student-date inventions.

It is cheaper than dinner, there is no awkward three-course commitment and, if things are going well, one coffee can easily turn into a walk afterwards.

Choose an area where there is something else nearby. Grab coffee in the city centre and wander through Company’s Garden. Meet in Sea Point and head towards the promenade afterwards. Pick Kalk Bay and turn one cup into an afternoon of browsing and walking.

The trick is to make the coffee the starting point, not the entire plan.

Pack A Picnic For Green Point Urban Park

A picnic feels far more organised than the amount of effort it actually requires.

Green Point Park is free to enter and has grassed areas, paths and picnic spaces, making it an easy option when you want a date that lasts longer than 45 minutes but does not require a reservation.

Each person can bring something instead of one person paying for everything. Sandwiches, fruit, chips and cold drinks are enough.

Add a pack of cards if you need an activity. Leave the giant romantic picnic setup with the candles, cushions and floral arch to people with storage space.

Walk The Sea Point Promenade

If conversation is easier when you’re moving, go for a promenade walk. There is plenty to look at, you can stop whenever you feel like it and you don’t need to keep inventing conversation while staring directly at each other across a tiny table.

Go around late afternoon and stay for sunset, or grab an inexpensive ice cream or coffee along the way. It is simple, but simple is underrated.

Make A Beach Date Out Of What You Already Have

A beach date only becomes expensive when you start buying everything after you arrive.

Pack towels, water, sunscreen and food from home, then choose your beach according to the weather.

Muizenberg works well if you want a more energetic beachfront atmosphere. Clifton can feel like you have planned something extremely impressive despite the actual plan being “sit on sand and look at ocean.”

Explore A Neighbourhood Together

A date does not always need a destination. Choose an area neither of you knows particularly well and go walking.

Kalk Bay gives you a harbour, independent shops and plenty of places to stop. If you enjoy exploring beyond the obvious tourist checklist, our guide to Cape Town adventures beyond the tourist traps has more ideas.

You can even make a ridiculous rule: each person has R50 to find the strangest second-hand item, best snack or worst souvenir. Suddenly “going for a walk” has a plot.

Try A Study Date That Includes An Escape Plan

Sometimes your schedules are terrible and you genuinely do have work to finish. Meet somewhere suitable for an hour or two of studying, then reward yourselves afterwards with a walk, snack or coffee.

Just establish whether this is actually a study date. If one person arrives ready to discuss lecture notes while the other has mentally planned a romantic afternoon, the syllabus is no longer your biggest problem.

Watch A Sunset Without Ordering Anything

Cape Town sunsets do a lot of heavy lifting for student romance. Signal Hill is the obvious choice, but you can also find sunset spots along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the city.

Bring your own drinks and snacks, dress for the temperature once the sun goes down and give yourself enough time to get there safely.

If transport is the bit likely to blow the budget, our student guide to safe and affordable Cape Town transport can help you plan before you leave.

The Best Student Date Is One You Can Actually Afford

You do not need to pretend you’re living on a first-job salary while you’re still surviving tutorials and assignment deadlines.

Set a budget that works for both of you and build the plan around it. The point of the date is the person sitting across from you, not whether the waiter appears carrying something with dry ice.

Cape Town already provides the mountains, beaches, sunsets and interesting neighbourhoods. Use them.
