3 Exciting Advantages of Being Wrong

As a human, the thought of being wrong doesn’t seem that exciting – quite the opposite in fact!. It gives us a bit of an ego boost to say, “Ha! See? I knew it!” But the fact is, we don’t know everything, so it’s impossible for us to be right all the time, right?

So are there any advantages of being wrong?

Being Wrong Allows Us to Learn

One of the many benefits of being wrong is that we find new ways to accomplish things. When we’re born, we don’t immediately know everything. We have to learn somehow. And what better way to learn something than trying but not succeeding?

You can see where you’ve gone wrong and try again with the new information you’ve gathered from your previous attempt. You might only succeed on your 25th attempt, but then you’ve found 24 ways not to do something. You’ve also got a lot more insight and information that you can build on – we’re looking at you, Edison!

Another interesting benefit of getting it wrong is being granted the opportunity to find creative ways around a problem. The old cliche of thinking outside the box comes to mind.

Being Wrong is Humbling

The unexpected advantages of being wrong are endless, especially when it comes to heated discussions with others. When you’re debating with someone, all parties involved think that they’re right – which is why they’re arguing with you in the first place. Sometimes everyone is right, and other times no one is right, but everyone can learn from the argument.

One person can realise that talking over the other person upsets everyone, and the other person might learn that yelling doesn’t get their point across. Someone may bring up a point that you hadn’t previously considered but which – irritatingly – makes a lot of sense.

Being Wrong Won’t Kill You

Society dictates that being wrong makes you stupid, but that’s certainly not the case. If you’re too worried about being wrong about something or scared of making mistakes, you’re never going to do anything meaningful.

Learning from your mistakes, picking yourself up and trying again shows strength of character. People might laugh at you for messing up, but those same people are probably among those that are too afraid of failure to achieve anything.

No one is excited to be wrong, but it is something that we can gladly accept and use to improve ourselves.
