Whilst you’re checking the house condition, make sure to look for other potential issues such as cracking, peeling paint, crumbling plaster, or wood rot. Check the hinges on cupboard doors, make sure there’s no damage to the carpets or tiles and just see if there’s any cracks on the windows.
Plumbing is something that needs to be checked to see if your student accommodation is well maintained. You can ask the landlord or whoever is showing you the house if there are any leaky pipes, clogged drains, cracked basins or faulty taps that they would need to fix before you would move in.
You could even check yourself to see if there’s any obvious damage to pipes or strange sounds coming from the taps when you use them. (Consider giving the toilet a quick flush to make sure everything is in working order.)
Another point in considering whether or not your student accommodation is well maintained is taking a look at the appliances. Are any appliances included in the accommodation, such as a refrigerator or microwave? If these are included, what condition are they in?
Some accommodations already have a few of these appliances but they might not be in great condition. The fridge might not keep your food chilled or the microwave could start sparking. Asking about the condition of the appliances would benefit you greatly in the upcoming months.
So, you’ve checked all the cupboard doors and taps and nothing seems to be broken, there’s no clogged drains and no funny smells. The windows and doors all work and the walls and floors are in good repair.
You could probably move in now that you’re satisfied that your student accommodation is well maintained and it’s one less thing to worry about.
