How to Learn from Your Mistakes

Everybody makes mistakes. The question is, how do you deal with making mistakes and how can you ensure that you learn from mistakes when they are made?

It is important to know that making mistakes is part of any learning process, and we need to learn how to make the best of them. There are a few ways you can move past your mistakes and create a healthy learning atmosphere.

Be Specific About Mistakes

Take responsibility for mistakes, and your actions. Ask yourself what kind of error did you make? Knowing you got an answer wrong for example does not teach you anything but knowing that you did not understand a question or a concept gives you an area to improve on.

Reach out to lecturers and class instructors to help in these areas. Sometimes the problem feels much bigger to you than it is.

They Don’t Define You

Many successful people admit that without the errors, they would not be where they are today. Mistakes can be laughed at and corrected but do not put yourself down when you make an error – you are not your mistakes.

Let Go of Fear

The fear of failure is the biggest thing that holds us back. Mistakes can be seen as proof that you are trying something new, or trying to better yourself, and with them, you are learning and growing. Embrace the possibility of making a mistake and move forward.

Reshape Goals

Refocusing after a mistake is critical. Stop and take a minute to figure out what you learned, what you need and what is no longer serving you and change what needs changing.

View as Opportunities

Seeing mistakes as opportunities to learn, makes you realize that there are no real mistakes, only a learning curve. By changing this mindset, you will be able to move away from the negative and focus on the positive which will give you a way forward.
