It comes as something of a shock to many young people that Varsity isn’t all parties and making cool friends. Very quickly, the stresses of work, money, student accommodation, health, and a host of other factors pile up.

Is it possible to deal with overwhelm in University? What can we do to cope with the physical, mental, and emotional stress that suddenly faces us?

Yes, we each deal with things differently, but there are certain universal truths that will apply to most of us.

Talk to your tribe

There’s no trophy for battling along on your own. Perhaps you feel now that you’re living away from home that you need to just suck it up and do your best. That’s not a thing.

Nobody expects you to handle everything life throws at you on your own, and certainly not when you’re starting such an important chapter of your educational career.

Talking to your parents, friends, and family is a wise place to start. Don’t be afraid to lean on those who have your best interests at heart. Sometimes, hearing your problems out loud helps you to understand them better yourself and make sense of it all.

Get professional help

If you feel that you need more than a vent to your family, then seek out the assistance of the support provided on campus.

University counsellors are trained to help you in many ways, from practical load-balancing suggestions to deep seated psychological matters. When you can’t see the wood for the trees, then call on someone who is qualified to help with these exact issues. Remember, almost half of all university students will be facing some form of anxiety, depression, or overwhelming stress – you’re not alone.

Get organised

When you feel that familiar anxiety start to creep in and you aren’t sure where to start, stop, and write it down.

We all procrastinate when we don’t have a clear way forward, and many of us need to have a serious look at our time management skills. However, noting down what needs to be done, and prioritising what’s important, goes a long way toward helping you to cope.
